Melamine On The Walls

There is so much to learn about Mid-Century style.  Every day I head over to Retro Renovation, read one of Pam’s posts and think, “I didn’t know that.”  Then I go to the local thrift store and I see a cool glass or a piece of furniture and I think, “Wow, that’s new.”

And now, something else that blows my mind.  Vintage melamine panels for the wall.

Marlite Panels

For those of you who, like me, are just discovering the joys of melamine and melamac, here is an ad for baked melamine tongue-and-groove panels for the walls.  I didn’t know you could put melamine on the walls. I always thought veneers were either wood or a resin type plastic, but here I am learning something new. I wonder what colors the old Marlite used to come in?  If they would have had pink, I would have been all over it.

If you are interested, Marlite planks are still avaliable today.

And for those of you who are old hands at this and are rolling your eyes, bear with me. I’m new.

Interesting post! I used to manage some gift stores for Motorola and we had this EXACT same stuff on the walls. We all just called it “Slatwall”. It was installed with the lines/grooves running horizontally and the you could put hooks or shelving brackets into the grooves.

Hi Ruth, Unfortunately I do not have any pics of it 🙁 Funny that you mentioned pink though, because I remember one of the stores had this mauvey/pink color of Slatwall. Now I wish I had gotten some pics of the stores. So I bet they did have some really cool pink colors back in the 50’s! To bad none of the Motorola gift stores are no longer open. There used to be like 10 different Motorola plants scattered all over the Phoenix area, and all of them had employee gift stores in them. Now there is like one tiny Motorola facility left here. I guess it is just a sign of the times. It is unfortunate though. I was laid off from Moto in 2001, and it just got worse and worse after that. I am totally hooked on your blog! It is funny because the only blogs I really follow are yours and the Retro Reno blog – seriously! Seems like we like the alot of the same stuff – antiquing/thrifting/retro houses/road trips with our husbands/Perch :). You are doing a great job, esp. since you said it was only a month or so old. I wanted to say congratulations on the whole advertising thing, that is really fantastic. Will you have to change your format then?

Did you realize Marlite is still in business. You can even by new wall systems that look like the vintage. MDF that looks like the metal. Awesome stuff. Check out their website.
