Vintage Jewelry – My Ever-Growing Collection

vintage-finds-017Way at the beginning of this blog, I posted a picture of my vintage finds that included this great jewelry box.  There was just something about the teal-y velvet inside that called out to me, and I bought it.  At the time, I had about three pairs of vintage earrings. Well, my collection has grown.

Here is a current picture of the inside of the box, complete with the recent jewelry finds from the local Goodwill. I love it there, mostly because every pair of earring is still $.69 even if they are old.  So, whenever a new cache of jewelry comes in, I stock up on the clip earrings. Oh, I buy the pierced ones and give them away to my friends (Hi Sara! Hi Nahrain!), but I hoard the clip ones for myself. Know why?

I don’t have pierced ears.

vintage-finds-018I know! Shocking, isn’t it? I am not sure why that is.  I just never got them done. When my sister got hers done at 12, I would have given anything to sit in the chair next to her and have the beautician pierce my ears as well. Even when I saw how much it hurt I was still game.  I am not sure what happened to that enthusiasm.  In the two years between her turn and mine, I just wasn’t as interested anymore.  My mother didn’t push me to get it done, so when my turn actually got there I just…let it go. In the years afterwards, I decided my face was too round for earrings anyway, and besides, my hair was so long (down to the middle of my back) that even if I had earrings no one would notice them. It would be a waste.

vintage-finds-019By the time I got to college, I started liking the uniqueness of being the only one who had NO piercings at all. I was different, which I loved. While other girls cut their hair short to show off their row of piercings on their ears, I cut mine because I had never been able to have short hair at home. Showing off my ears was just a bonus. It was great. I loved it. And it was a great way to tell serious friends and boyfriends from just aquaintences. A gift of pierced earrings showed me that you really didn’t know me at all.

So, I still don’t have my ears pierced. And I love to buy clip earrings. Vintage clips, to be exact.  I have found some of the most amazing designs. And as long as they stay $.69 at the local thrift store, I will keep buying them.

Beautiful collection! I love vintage jewelry; I’ve gotta post about some of mine one of these days….

It’s great that you can be you and proud of it! And these days, you’re a REAL rarity, what with people piercing every body part they can think of!
