Alex’s Christmas Contest Entry – A Tree Covered With Elf Heads & An Awesome Pink Tree

The Super Cool Prize!

Hi Everyone!

I am really excited about this post because, besides the fact that it has some super cool pics, it is the first entry in my Mid-Century Christmas in September contest!  For a detailed explanation of the contest, go here, but the gist of it is that you submit your Mid-Century Christmas entry by this Friday, it gets displayed on the blog, and then readers get to vote on the winner!  Exciting, huh?  The winner of the contest gets 15 retro Christmas Cards from The Studio at What’s Buzzin, and they are really cool.

In any case, here is our first entry, from my friend Alex

S7300415Last Christmas began as a bad one for me.  Since I was a little girl, I can remember getting excited about bringing down all of my parents vintage Shiny Bites and decorating the tree.  It had to be a real tree.  This past Christmas was the first time that I just didn’t want to bring down any ornaments, and I sure as hell didn’t want to drag a half dead tree through the living room.  My part of the country had been in a severe drought, so you couldn’t even find a decent live tree.  I moped around the house in my bathrobe and whimpered a lot.  One day I was strolling through Big Lots, our local discount store, and I about tripped over my own bottom lip because I was pouting so much.  Then I saw it.  It was a freaking pink tree, and it looked very mod!  Visions of vintage Shiny Brites started to dance in my head.  Oh, and my 1950’s Santa Claus that freaks everyone out would look perfect under this special find.  In the middle of Big Lots with all of the bustle around me, I closed my eyes.  I could see all of the little space ship ornaments and the bells and the Shiny Brites with glitter.  They were all there.  But wait!  It’s a fake tree.  I couldn’t have a fake tree…could I?  A smile started to spread across my face.  I snatched the last pink tree from the shelf and darted to the checkout.

S7300437This past Christmas was the best one yet.  I came home every evening, and I would just sit and stare at all of the vintage ornaments.  I could point out the oldest one on the tree.  It was one of the first vintage ornaments that my parents had bought, when they first got married.  I could see a worn and dull mint green, glass bell ornament.  It was my first vintage Christmas find at an old flea market in the South. The evil, vintage Santa Claus would smile at me with his worn, plastic face.  I could remember crawling all over him, when he sat under my parent’s tree.  I had even been inspired to pull down decorations that I had not used in years.  My nephew had found a 1950’s (made in Japan) tabletop tree that was covered in elf heads.  It came down from the attic and was promptly placed right in the front hall.  It was a conversation starter…to say the least.  Everything that made me smile was on display for Christmas, and it was all because of the pink Big Lots tree that reminded me of my love for a 1950’s Christmas.
Awesome entry, Alex!  You are so lucky to score a pink tree, and that elf-head tree is totally Kitschy Christmas.  I love it.  Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks! Did anyone watch Oprah today? She was focusing on the 60’s and Mad Men. I’ve never watched this show because I don’t have cable. Is it worth buying the first season?

Alex – First off, your tree is the bomb girl!!! Pink is the absolute best, and I would have bought one too, if I knew they had pink trees at Big Lots! And the mini Elf tree is awesome! I love all those old vintage Elf ornaments – I have a bunch to hang on the tree and they are hilarious

Second – You MUST buy Mad Men!!! Don’t walk, RUUUUUN, to your nearest Target (or where ever) and buy season 1 and 2. You will totally get hooked on this show. If you don’t want to buy the DVDs you could probably rent them as well, but you gotta see this show!!!

That pink tree is amazing (and oh, how I really miss Big Lots now), but what I really like is the E.V. Santa Claus! We had a plastic blow-up Santa with some kind of weight on the bottom, so when we got too excited (or creeped out), we could just give it a whack and watch it pop right back up, smiling at us for more!
