September 22, 2009Tuesday’s Retro Guest – Marcia From Swizzlestix.net!
Hello, all! Welcome to Tuesday’s Retro Guest. This week, I am happy to welcome Marcia from Swizzlestix! What is Swizzlestix? Well, it is a really sweet line of household textiles (placemats, towels, aprons & more!) designed with a very cool retro feel to them. So when Marcia was interested in doing a guest post, I was thrilled to feature her. I mean, who wouldn’t be excited to feature the maker of this awesome pink apron?
Very sweet, isn’t it? I think I am in love! Marcia writes:
Swizzlestix is a design pad that embraces retro-modern culture and lifestyles by creating various, paper, tabletop and home decor products. Tantalizing colors and geometric swirls will hypnotize you into a modern world that is inspired by a retro past.
Raised and educated in St. Louis, I studied fine art with an emphasis in painting and printmaking. During college I was heavily into goth rock, new wave and the club scene, and my artistic style reflected my look. I enjoyed being a fine artist and loved all the freedom that it offered, but I knew in order to gain financial stability, I would have to develop broader skills. So I expanded into the world of graphic design, where I’ve been using pixels and pantones to splash my creativity for over 14 years, for a mostly corporate client base.
In 2003, I felt the urge to design whatever I wanted without the limitations that came with my job, so I created a line of greeting cards, and started selling my collection to various San Francisco and Los Angeles boutiques. After much encouragement from clients, family and friends, I expanded into the world of textile design, and in 2005 I started Swizzlestix. I design aprons, tea towels, placemats, coasters, pillows, and whatever else strikes my fancy, all with a retro modern feel. These products have been sold at various design shows, stores, art galleries, and online.
My inspiration comes from a variety of things: San Francisco’s colorful neighborhoods, architecture, music, modern and vintage fashion, books, home decor, antique stores, my travels, and more.
People often ask me how I came up with the name Swizzlestix. Before I started Swizzlestix my boyfriend and I were throwing lots of cocktail parties, and my love for tasty, innovative cocktails and retro culture was the inspiration behind my initial card designs. I was trying to come up with a name while sitting at the table staring at a dozen cocktail-themed greeting cards when swizzle sticks came to mind. I got it – I’ll just change the spelling and add an ‘x’ at the end – and wah-lah – Swizzlestix was it!
I just love watching my creations evolve, and knowing that I can share my products with others and help brighten their homes makes it all worthwhile!
