Vintage Crafty Saturday – Learn To Crochet and Free Coin Purse Pattern

Hello, everyone!  I came across a great stack of knitting and crochet books from the 1950’s and 1960’s at my local Salvation Army recently, and I was so excited.  Stay tuned for some great sweater and accessory patterns!  Until then…well…I have to learn how to knit.  And crochet. Luckily, I found this book in with the stack, which is going to teach me knitting, crocheting AND tatting.  I have been dying to learn tatting.

Oh, and that scream of frustration you hear is my mom in Wisconsin. She has tried repeatedly to teach me to crochet and the lessons never took.  My sister is pretty good at it, but I could just never get the hang of it for some reason. Well, I am serious about it this time, Ma, I swear!

Aaaaaanyway, the book has detailed instructions with pictures, so hopefully this will help me and anyone else out there who is crochet-deficient. And there is even a cute coin purse pattern at the end to try your new skill in.  It will probably take me forever to finish something like that. But don’t let that stop you guys!

My mother had a Learn How Book, it had a red cover and the only other thing I remember was it had instructions for tatting in it. My mother had a tatting shuttle and some thread, but she never quite got the hang of it and gave up. When I saw the cover of your book find, it brought back a host of memories from growing up in the ’70’s.

Don’t feel bad Ruth, I can’t knit or crochet worth a lick either! 🙂

I wasn’t able to crochet or knit until I was into my 30’s, LOL! I can tat, however. I have that same book! It’s a classic!

Love your site! I was taught to knit and crochet by my Mother and the original issue of this book about 50 years ago. I bought my own copy in 1975 and still refer to it when I need a refresher. In fact, it’s sitting in my knitting basket right now!

Wow! I picked up this little book over 30 years ago and it’s been a great reference. I don’t crochet often and this book is like a little refresher course.

My 1959 edition does NOT have the coin purse pattern. Thanks for posting it!
