Diamondhead Fabrics! Soooo Retro!

By Sara In AZ

I don’t know about y’all, but I am crazy about fabric! Especially Bark Cloth fabric! I recently came across Diamondhead Fabrics,  a company that carries a lot of the fabric designs made by Big Kahuna– and it also seems to carry some other manufacturers as well.  Big Kahuna has some really terrific retro/atomic prints – and I can vouch for the quality of their fabric, it is really nice thick, heavyweight Bark Cloth. I really like the aspect of being able to buy this fabric new because I have been sorely disappointed in the past with some of my vintage Bark Cloth falling to pieces from dry rot or other problems. And then there is always the problem of ‘do you really have enough for the project you want to accomplish’. Well, with Diamondhead Fabrics all you have to do is place a minimum order for 2 yards and you can decide how much to get. And get this – all of the Bark Cloth I was looking at was priced at $15.95 a yard w/free shipping!!! I know I have seen some other “new” Bark Cloth cost as much as $40 a yard, even more sometimes. Not all of the cloth featured on the Diamondhead site was Bark Cloth – but all of the cloth I have featured below is Bark Cloth.

Check out the awesome “Jetson” pattern in different colors! I can just picture some plinch pleats in these.

And here is a modern type print on Bark Cloth. This one is also made by Big Kahuna.  This print comes in Chocolate and Black colors as well.

And here is a tropical Bark Cloth print from Big Kahuna. They have more prints that they show on the Big Kahuna website, but you cannot buy anything from Big Kahuna, as they do not sell to retail customers. You will need to go through Diamondhead Fabrics for all of your purchases. Diamomondhead also shows more tropical patterns on their site, but not all of them were Bark Cloth.

I don’t know about y’all, but I may have to think about making an order soon!

Thank you, Sara!!!!!!! These are just great! Love the Jetsons. And, believe it or not, a couple weeks ago I bought four indoor/outdoor chair cushions for my vintage patio set (cushions made in the USA, ten bucks each at our local Roses store) which are covered in the Fern barkcloth. YIPPPEEE. No wonder I was drawn to this particular print.

Great resource, Sara!! Love that Jetson’s print! I am totally with you about not doing projects with vintage fabric. I feel terrible about cutting into it, and my sewing skills are such that I am not sure I could do a whole project without making a major mistake.

Annie!!! Girl, you need to get a camera or a camera phone or something!!! We NEED to see those cushions!

Duh!!! Ruth, thanks for tweaking my brain! I DO have a camera phone.
By the way, these cushions are reversable. The opposite side is a stripe pattern in the black, green, and rust colors of the “Fern” side. They’re thick and comfortable, too. If anyone is interested in them, I might be able to mail some to you! (No shipping charge!) Let me know while Roses still has a good supply.

Thanks so much for posting this! Hubby and I are going to be building a couch at some point, and I was having a hard time finding barkcloth sources. These are great!
