Dorothy Needs Our Help – Her Pink 1955 Geneva Kitchen and Her Tragedy

By RetroRuth

Oh my gosh, people.  We are dealing with a true vintage emergency here!   Dorothy writes:

I have a 1955 pink Geneva kitchen with the original
thermador oven and range. We are renovating the counters and the floor, but
a contractor threw out one of the 12X 24 drawers for under the range and we
are devastated! We need to find a replacement. I was wondering if you had
any contacts for finding a replacement? If you would be so kind to give us
some information I would be grateful.  I have included pictures the rest of the cabinets, as
well as some close ups of the drawer with the 12 X 24 front face.

Alas!!! The HORROR!!!  I was kind of thinking of saving this post for Halloween, you know, to really scare the socks off of everyone, but I decided that Dorothy’s story couldn’t wait that long.

So, here are some pictures of Dorothy’s pink Geneva kitchen:

And here is a picture of the drawer she is looking for.

Handle closeup.

Does ANYONE have any ideas on this?  I suggested Dorothy try posting on the RetroRenovation.com forum and emailing Pam, and that I would consult all of you to see if anyone else could come up with a brillant idea.

So, leave a comment or send me an email and let’s help Dorothy!

So sorry to hear this horrible news Dorothy.

First off, I would definitely make your contracter pay for a new drawer – if/when you can find one. Or you could make him pay for a new drawer to be fabricated from a steel fabricator in your area. Obviously, the drawer would not be exactly the same but you could probably get a pretty close match. Then you would have to have a powder coater match your pink — again it probably would not be exactly the same, but close. Definitely contact Pam over at RR, she may be able to help you.

Grrrrrrrrr! Anyone up for strangling the contractor? What an awful dilemma!

I will surely keep my eyes open on C-list. Bob will be leaving for FL soon and he’ll travel all over the state if we find one there.

What an awful way to begin your Monday, Dorothy. I feel so blue.

Also agree with Sara and make the dumbell contractor pay in full! He definately needs an MCM attitude adjustment!

I will keep an eye open around the thrift shops of Los Angeles. I suggest that Dorothy go on ebay and Craig’s List and start posting her request. The internet can be a real help in situations such as this. Also, why not go to a carpenter? With these great pictures I’m sure a good craftsman could recreate this drawer. It truly is done all the time and though it wouldn’t be original you wouldn’t know the difference when it is done. I think the kitchen is just grand. Wonderful color scheme. I wish you well, my dear because, of course, living in Hollywood I’m a Friend of Dorothy’s! (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)
