Mid-Century Oklahoma Home and Covina Bowl in Covina, CA

Hello, All!  Today we have a fun email with some pictures from TJ.  TJ writes:

Hi, I started reading your blog because of Mid Century Menu!  Love it.  I’ve always been curious about why they came up with some of those recipes, and the fact that you are making them and Tom is eating them (okay, you are too, but he is my hero), is so cool.  I love the Gallery of Regrettable Food, and have spent years looking for sites on the internet showcasing old recipe books and cards.  Anyway, I thought you might be interested in some pictures of some nice Mid Century things.

I am including pictures of Covina Bowl in Covina, CA.  They are bad pictures because I was in my car and couldn’t get out without stopping and waking the baby.  Covina Bowl is classic Googie.  (I live in So Cal, so Tiki and Googie are EVERYWHERE—concrete blocks EVERYWHERE.  Would be a dream for you).

I am also including pictures of my mom’s house in Oklahoma.  She still has her 80’s furniture (purchased for a different house), but is slowly replacing it with more period styled furniture.  I thought you might like the windows and room dividers and ceiling, though (she did not include a picture of her kitchen, which she has furnished with a small diner styled table and fiestaware).  She also has all my grandma’s old recipe books, the 1960’s Encyclopedia of Cookery and she still uses my grandma’s old Sunbeam stand mixer from the 1950’s (maybe 1940’s?).

anyway, love your blog!

Thanks for the great email, TJ.  LOVE your mom’s house, make sure to send us more pictures as she finds her “new” furniture.  We always love to see a mid-century home in the hands of someone who appreciates and loves it!

It’s always fun getting the latest from your site. It was great to see the Covina Bowl as it is right near out church! It’s great architecture and impressive close up, as well. How interesting that now that I’m older I appreciate mid-century architecture and design so much more. In fact, I bought a home because of it in the desert and just love it. Keep the issues coming and thank you. The only thing I don’t like about the era is the food. Don’t know how people ate some of those items on the menu! Your mom’s house is truly a gem. The windows make it!
