Vintage-Inspired Advertising from Electrolux and Moma

By RetroRuth

I love the effect “Mad Men” is having on current trends. More and more I have noticed ads and commercials that play up retro themes, or have a vintage piece central to their theme.  Most just have obvious mid-century modern overtones in the furniture or clothing, but some just have bits that I get all excited about.  For example, a recent commercial for Walt Disney World vacations has a vintage white stove in the background while the parents are checking vacation prices online.  The viewers attention is drawn to the stove when the dad gets up to make coffee.  Everytime that commercial comes on, I yell to Tom, “Look at the stove! Look at the stove!”  I am pretty sure he doesn’t even listen anymore.  But it is a great beacon of hope for those of us to hate to see good vintage thrown away for something “new”.  Wouldn’t be amazing if vintage appliances became all the rage?

And check out fun Electrolux commercial, which just screams “swank”.

I also saw, just recently, this series of posters created by Moma, an advertising agency in Brazil, for the MaxiMedia Seminar in July of 2010.  The idea behind the posters is to accentuate the how quickly technology changes, and now it is essential for companies to stay updated on technology. They did a series with Twitter, Skype, Facebook and YouTube, but I have to say the Skype poster is my favorite.

Check out the rest of the series here.

What about you, readers?  See any good retro ads lately??

Super nice! I hope that the trend leads companies to start making colored appliances again – well, besides those brightly colored front loading washers and dryers. I’d LOVE it if stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers would come in fun colors again and not for specialty “Big Chill” prices.

I can’t remember any commercials that I’ve seen but I have noticed that there are soooooo many more products on the market now with vintage styles and sensibilities. I love it.

I love the fact that even though it’s a vintage styled ad, it’s got a dude vacuuming!

I love how they made what is presumably the guy’s cell phone in the twitter ad look period appropriate, too.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one screaming about that stove in the DisneyWorld ad!

For a long time now, it seems like ads have been using vintage modern architecture as background when they wanted to convey “sophistication” about their products (especially cars), but now we’re seeing more vintage modern interiors too. And I personally don’t think it’s just the “Mad Men” effect; the style is finally being embraced as a genuine, period-specific decor style, just like Queen Anne, Art Deco, Craftsman or Colonial. Except that WE have the option of also incorporating appliances, since many of them still exist!
