MCM Home Improvement – Wall Treatments and More Fabric

By Sablemable aka Jan

This was a fun research project to do as I discovered two sites that I didn’t know about.

You know the area above the kitchen cabinets, the soffit(s), I believe they’re called?  It’s a what’s-a-girl/guy-to-do dilemma as far as decorating goes.  Do we paint it?  Wallpaper it?  What?  What!

Here’s a few ideas.

Stenciling has been around for quite some time, but there’s never been anything for the MCM home.  At Home Art and Fun (www.homeartandfun.com) they offer stencils with a definite MCM style.  The stencils shown below are repeating or allover stencils.

MAUD FLOWERS LARGE  AT $55.00

MAUD FLOWERS SMALL AT $32.00 (ON SALE!)

Jan Dressler’s stencil website (www.dresslerstencils.com) has the Robin Carter Collection which has a couple of MCM designs.  Eggz and Chopsticks.  Unfortunately, all images are copyrighted, so I can’t show them to you.  But go check them out on her website, please.  You won’t be disappointed.

I’m not crazy about wallpapering, but after seeing these, Iam considering adding wallpaper.

At Design Your Wall (www.designyourwall.com), I found two kitchen wallpaper designs that are a big thumbs up for MCM kitchens!  I forgot to find out if the wallpaper is single or double rolls, but each are a 30 square foot roll going for (hold your breath) $98.99 per roll.  Ouch!  Samples are available.

CHICKEN AND CHICKS ON A GRAY BACKGROUND

KITCHEN UTENSILS ON A BLUE BACKGROUND

If you haven’t heard of Bradbury and Bradbury (www.bradbury.com), then you’re missing a real treat when it comes to MCM wallpaper.  Their MCM line is called Atomic Age and here are a few that will send you straight to the floor in a dead faint.  Both shown are 30 square foot rolls.  They also have samples.

ATOMIC DOODLE PINK (ALSO IN TURQUOISE AND TAUPE) FOR $72.00 A ROLL

GEE GEE BISQUE (ALSO IN GRAY AND SAGE) IS $58.00 PER ROLL

If you’re wanting something to go with your late Sixties to early Seventies home, Bradbury and Bradbury have you covered.  This is from their Mod Generation Line and the rolls are 30 square feet.

WONDERWALL MARMALADE (ALSO IN GINCHY GREEN AND MOODY BLUE) IS $62.00 A ROLL

REVERB TAMBOURINE GREEN (ALSO IN PURPLE TANGERINE, NAUGAHYDE, AND MOODY BLUE) RUNS $62.00 PER ROLL

I was ecstatic, almost giddy with joy when I found this website.  Melina Made (www.melinamadefabrics.com), not only has wallpaper, but heavy duty barkcloth upholstery/drapery material that is designed with MCM home owners in mind.  First the wallpaper, which only comes in single rolls and the samples shown below are all $35.00 per roll.

BOOMERANG PINK (ALSO COMES IN MUSHROOM AND WHITE)

STARRY NIGHT WHITE (ALSO COMES IN LEMON)

TIKI FOREST (ALSO IN TIKI SUNGOLD)

Now for the fabric, and I’m only showing two samples of what is offered.  Those shown are $40.00 a yard and the fabric, as I had mentioned earlier, is 100% barkcloth in upholstery and drapery grade material.

BOOMERANG WHITE

JETSON WHITE

Now our only dilemma is what-do-we-choose!

Readers, tell me about your favorite wallpaper store and what samples made your head spin.

OMG that kitchen utensils wallpaper is AMAZING! When I have more money I’m calling my landlord to see if I can put it in my kitchen!

Caitlin! Yes, I liked that design, too! My mother had something similar in her kitchen during the Fifties, but it had a white background with red and black utensils.

    Sableeeeeeeee,

I love these!! Look at that “Starry Night” pattern. It’s like having Franciscan’s “Starburst” china on the wall.

Great post Sable!!!!!! I also like that Bradbury wallpaper ‘Googieland’. I’m not sure, but I think the Melinamade wallpaper you showed might currently be out of stock. Hope it comes back soon!!!

Awesome post! I am loving the stencils, I think I need to find a way to work that into my kitchen somewhere. I am also loving the wallpaper, especially the reverb one. The colours would go perfect in my living room – too bad I can’t put another print in here!

Andreaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! I like the Reverb, too in green and in the purple/tangerine colors. Naugahyde is kind of bland. Let us know if you paper your walls with it, or something similar.

That goes for the rest of you as well, LOL! We have the need to know along with photos!!!!!!

I ordered the MalinaMade Boomerang white for my bedroom! I cant wait for it to come. A local restaurant has it in their shop, and it is gorgeous, you’d think it was real vintage!

Also, although shown out of stock the hand made MalinaMade wallpaper is still available you just have to wait for them to make it!

Great research! I have been on the hunt for mid-century style tile decals or something similar to cover up the country fruit tiles in my kitchen, so maybe you wanna work on that next? 🙂

I have bought both the Bradbury & Bradbury wallpaper samples and the Melinamade wallpaper and fabric samples and all I can say is WOW! They are expensive, but if it fits into your budget, they would be very worth it. You can feel the quality, the heaviness of the paper and fabrics. And the designs and colors are even better in person. The B & B samples are about the size of scrapbook background paper (12 x 12?), so I’m going to use them for something, even if it’s not my walls!

    Wait!

I have two sets of vintage curtains that I was planning to sell.

One set of 4 are fiberglass with golds and oranges on a cream background. Great condition. Drapery length, 84″ I think.

One set is blue, very similar to the last picture. 4 also. I have to go check because I can’t remember if one set is short and one long or both long (but I think both long).

    Interested?
