Life’s Little Thrifting Extras

By RetroRuth

I love unexpected windfalls.  An extra cookie at the bottom of a box you thought was empty. A $20 bill pulled from the pocket of dirty jeans on washday. When you wake up in the middle of the night and realize you can still sleep three hours before your alarm goes off.

Ah.  That last one is always the best.

But those little windfalls are especially fun when they happen to be vintage.

Meet Sparky.  He is a Martian. On a little Valentine.

A little space Valentine.

Sparky has a decoder wheel inside, where he has left you a little Valentine’s Day message in his alien language.

When you spin the wheel it causes Sparky’s eyes on the front cover to roll around in his head.

Sparky has just jumped the gap from cute to precious.

I found Sparky while reading through a Dick and Jane reader that was my Dad’s when he was growing up.  I love Dick and Jane, so I was thrilled to find those readers.  Flipping the book open to find little Sparky here, that was just a bonus.

I’m on a special flight from Mars,

And I was sent this way

By someone who would like to be

Your Valentine today!

What about you, guys?  What is the best thrifting bonus you’ve ever found?  A Christmas handkerchief in the pocket of a sweater?  A ring inside a baby food jar?

Let us know!

Most of mine are gross (think used tampon in a vintage jacket pocket…or wait, maybe DON’T think about it) but I did recently buy a Mid-Century sideboard and table at an estate sale and found a period furniture catalog from the line hidden in the bottom drawer of the sideboard. Stoked!

This Valentine is awesome! And knowing that it belonged to your Dad as a kid….sweet!

    That Valentine is adorable Ruth!

Actually, I’ve never really found anything great. In my one armed couch we did find some doilies though!
