MCM Home Improvement: Patio Furniture

By Sablemable aka Jan

Some of my best childhood memories center around sitting outside on the lawn furniture with my family during the summers.  We always had cook-outs with Dad manning the grill.  His one brother, George, used to drive down frequently from Muskegon with his family to enjoy steaks and Mom’s homemade vanilla ice cream.  The grownups would sit in metal lawn chairs, sipping iced cold beverages and reminisce of days gone by.  It was so much fun!

To help revive those memories I am on a quest to find some MCM patio furniture for my backyard.

Vintage Gliders has been restoring and refinishing the heavy, metal furniture of the Fifties era since 2002.  Prices are on the high side, but the furniture looks like brand new  the shipping is included in the costs.    Works for me!  They also sell unrestored furniture as well.  Please visit their website at www.vintageglider.com

Here are some of the pieces featured on the website.

Wrought iron patio furniture was also popular during the Fifties and into the Sixties.  The following images were taken from Vintage Ad Browser.

If you are a Handy Andy, you can search for vintage patio furniture on Craigslist and Ebay and restore your treasures yourself.  Common colors for the metal furniture came in red, green and yellow, but the sky’s the limit in your choice of hues.

Do you own any vintage lawn furniture, readers?

I really adore old patio furniture Sable! You may rememeber my post where I showed my 50s patio furniture -it was 2 woven rubber chairs. Here is a link – http://www.nopatternrequired.com/?p=10272

I also might just have a metal chair or 2 lying around! 🙂

Nothing metal, but I do own a one-of-a-kind concrete chair made by my father when he was fifteen. It is like a giant arm chair, but not solid. It has bars across it like a woven lawn chair, but without the verticals woven through them. My beloved husband says we can never move because he is not picking that “thing” up ever again. I don’t understand, it only took three grown men to get it out of the truck and into the front yard. 😉
