March 11, 2011MCM Home Improvement: This And That
By Sablemable aka Jan
I’m always looking for decorating inspiration from vintage magazines, Craigslist, et al, because frankly, my MCM memory isn’t what it used to be. So if your brain has also turned to mush, here are some things to help you decorate your homes. All images are courtesy of Vintage Ad Browser (www.vintageadbrowser.com).
The right set of dinnerware is so important for the MCM dining room. I have a similar set of dishes like the Royal Copenhagen, but they are brand new. Melamine sets are worth the hunt as I haven’t seen new versions of them.
I never tire of looking for and at furniture of that era. Bassett, Dunbar and other furniture makers had great lines of furniture pieces. I love that modern tete-a-tete sofa from Dunbar and I know just the spot in my living for that contour lounge chair!
Television sets from the Fifties were virtually a work of art. Fine hardwood cabinets with doors that opened and closed, exposing and hiding the television. Stromberg-Carlson had wonderful cabinets in about any style you would desire. Finding one of these and gutting the insides would make a great cabinet in the foyer, a place to lay down your hat and gloves.
You know of my love of Danish anything and Dansk made the best.
Even the cigarette lighters had style! Look at the table models put out by Ronson.
Miscellaneous items such as radios, picnic equipment, carpeting for example, will help you find retro reproductions or originals if in mint condition.
After seeing these pictures, my brain cells have come alive. How about yours, friends?
