My New Barkcloth: Real or Reproduction?

Ruth is having technical difficulties with her computer at the moment so I am doing a post for her today!

I was out shopping at Goodwill a few weeks ago when I came across this fabric.  It was marked $4.99 for each panel, but since it was half price day I got both pieces for $4.99. YAY! Seriously, I was stunned to find this because I have not found anything in weeks. The thrifts have been real lean here lately y’all.

I saw it and immediately thought it was vintage tropical barkcloth. My husband saw it and thought it was a new reproduction barkcloth.

This is the full repeat of the pattern on the cloth.

Here is a close up.

Here you can kind of see the texture of the fabric.

One more shot to try to capture the texture.

I have purchased new, reproduction, barkcloth and it does not have the same texture as this cloth. The colors also look totally different that anything I have seen on the new cloth.

There was no ‘Vat Prints’ stamp along the edges of the fabric.

So what do y’all think, is it real vintage barkcloth or new reproduction barkcloth?

Please help! 🙂

Based on what you’ve posted here, my vote is real. However – can you tell me what is printed on the selvage of the fabric? Then I will weigh in for sure 🙂

If it is real, you’re lucky to find such big pieces!

It looks soooo real. Either way, it’s gorgeous and quite the buy! Maybe someone will see this who has seen this fabric before.

    Deb – Thanks! 🙂

Sable – YAY – one vote for ‘real’! 🙂

Andrea – Unfortunately I can find no printing anywhere on this fabric. I know you are a super-expert in this stuff, so your vote really counts! 🙂

Eartha – I think it looks SO real too, but I love it either way. 🙂

Sara – I would say the fact that there isn’t any printing on it means nearly for sure that it is original. Modern fabrics of this type almost always have the name of the fabric, design company, etc printed on the selvage.

Andrea – OMG! I hadn’t even thought of that, but you are SO right!!! Companies always put their name all over everything now-a-days! Thanks girl! 🙂

I also vote for “real”. There’s something about the colours. You just don’t see these shade in new, or reproduction, fabrics.

Ruth – YAY! REAL!!! Thanks girl! 🙂

Colleen – Thank you! 🙂 I thought the same thing about those colors, you just don’t see those shades around anymore.
