The University Of Florida Digital Collection Is A GoldmineI love trolling through hours of mid-century goodness. It is even better when all the goodness is FREE!
Oh wait. Did I say hours? I don’t mean hours. I only mean on my brakes from writing. Twenty, thirty minutes tops. I swear. *cough*
Anyway, check out the University of Florida’s Digital Collections, which is packed full with DAYS of research material that you can access right from your computer!
Things like this:
From the Elmer Harvey Bone Photography Collection
From the UF Health Sciences Photograph Collection
Author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings on "The Yearling" movie set with Cal Long
From The Floridians Collection
From a 1963 newspaper from the Florida Newspaper Archive
They also have an entire Oral History Collection, which is fascinating
and a ton of fun to go through.
So, go on and enjoy yourselves! I am sure you will be able to find enough stuff to keep you busy for hours.
I mean…only on your breaks. Twenty to thirty minutes, tops.

I’ve been hooked on this collection for a couple of years, now. Being born and raised in Gainesville, it is a treasure trove of hometown info. Maybe, one of these days, I’ll actually drag myself the couple of miles down the street to the actual library and dig through the stuff that hasn’t been digitized yet. If you’re into Florida in general, the state archives has a good photo site that covers much more. Search “Florida Memory Project”.
