Bob Gets The Egg Off His Face
This week, we bring you Chapter 2 in our serialized Mid-Century book, Off To Work, published in 1962. Off to Work is a basic (read: very, very basic) reader story about Bob Grant, a teenager who just graduated from high school, and his friend, Sally.
Bob is depressed. He needs to get a job, and he looks like a slob. What is he going to do? Why, he is going to leave it to his sister, Ann, who is a successful hostess in a dining room. She’s going to teach him basic hygine, how to dress himself and how to aim really, really low.
“Don’t waste your time trying to get a job you can’t possibly do,” Ann explained. She threw away the advertisement for an office manager.
You can read Chapter 2 by clicking on the pictures below, or by using the fun flipping book feature from our digital library. Chapter 1 can be found here.

The language and writing indicates this is a book for the ‘slow’ class in school, and the fact the kids are excited about getting jobs as maids rather than, say, going to college, confirms it! I bet Sally has a thing for bad boys and runs off on the back of Mugs’ motorbike. Can’t wait to read more.

That Mugs, I can only imagine the trouble he’ll get into!
Cute book Ruth!
