MCM Furniture AND Bowling In “The Golden Years”

By RetroRuth

GoldenYe1960_000810Prepare to be blown away by some awesome MCM design in this fun little film about the wonders of bowling in the 1960’s.  This great piece comes, once again, from the Prelinger Archives and is basically a giant commercial for Brunswick.

But you don’t hear me complaining. The colors, lines and overall design of the “recreation centers” are mid-century amazing.  Just the colors alone knock me flat on the floor, and make me wonder if I could get one of these installed in my basement!

The Prelinger Archives has this to say about the film:

This film was part of the drive by automatic pin-setting equipment manufacturers in the fifties to change bowling’s image from beer and blue-collar to cookies and family togetherness. It tells us that convenience, comfort and style are “the ultimate desires of today, tomorrow, and the years ahead of us,” and can be found, specifically, in Brunswick Bowling Centers. Even more specifically, in the Brunswick Bowling Centers depicted in this beautifully styled and photographed production, where everything is spotless, freshly waxed, and has pin-spot lighting.

Enjoy this great, classic film. The designs and colors are going to make you wish a “new” Brunswick center was opening near you!

That film made me want to check out the decor in old bowling alleys! On googling Brunswick, I see they’ve changed their font. Too bad. The old one was cool.

What a great little video. Amazing how they used to look so hip and retro. I kinda wish you could get one installed in your basement too! 🙂
