Vintage Wallpaper Hidden In Mom’s 1950s Time Capsule Condo

By Sara In AZ

Sooooooo, Mom and I were at the condo prepping everything for paint. You know how it is – you have to take down all the doors, all the register vents, the outlet covers, the switch plates (right Andrea?!?) if you want everything looking right and not have paint blobbed all over everything.

Mom and I  were in the bathroom, and in the process of taking down the mirror in there, when we found some vintage wallpaper behind the mirror! I was kinda excited, as it is so cool to see these little remnants of what the condo used to look like.

This is the mirror we were taking down, the one right over the sink.

Her is the first layer of wallpaper we found. Straight out of the 1980s/1990s I’d say, with a total southwest look!

Here is Mom excitedly scraping away at the wallpaper to see what we can reveal!

After the southwest wallpaper we came across this sweet little floral wallpaper in the next layer.  This wallpaper was definitely of the ‘old school’ variety, as it had that construction paper feel to it – no vinyl here.

Next up we have the pink stripe wallpaper! Someone must have known I like pink! I think it is really cute and I can only imagine how sweet the bathroom looked with this on the walls!

Lastly, we have what I call the Daisy ‘Pop Art’ wallpaper! This wallpaper is so super adorable I only wish I could peel back the layers of paint and wallpaper to have this all over the bathroom walls again.

Here is what we were left with when nothing else would peel away. Quite the wallpaper montage I would say! I had to spackle around all the edges because they were pretty rough from all the wallpaper layers being torn away. I did however leave that lower section of Daisy wallpaper just as you see it here, so when future owners take down the bathroom mirror they to will be able to see the original 1959 wallpaper too!

Come back next Thursday, when we just about kill ourselves removing all the flooring!

I can imagine your sense of discovery. What fun. I did this once, too, but not so many layers! Thanks for your report.

I love surprise wallpaper! That daisy print really is too cute. I have a couple of spots with surprise wallpaper in my basement. Did I mention before my violent dislike of people painting over switchplates??? LOL!

Surprise wallpaper is the best! I think we need to see pics of your surprise wallpaper!!! Please! 🙂 Yeah, I think we were mentioning possible jail time, a few posts back, for people who painted over things like switch plates! 😉

Yikes, FOUR layers of wallpaper painted over? The corners of the room must be “rounders.” 🙂

I was doing a search for southwestern themed wallpaper when I found this post.
I have exactly this same pattern of southwest paper on the walls in my kitchen.
I absolutely LOVE IT but it is worn out and about to fall off the walls (having hung it in 1989).
I wonder if anyone might know if it is still available and where I could find some.
    Please lemmeno…….
