My New Year Resolutions

By Sablemable aka Jan

No, I’m not going on a weight loss diet (already doing that), dye my hair black or start tatting.  Instead all of my resolutions center around my MCM house.

Now, last year I discussed with you, dear readers, about various projects, all of which never got done!

So, with the help of The Bob (husband), we set three goals to complete.

The numero uno project that desperately needs to be started and finished are my kitchen cabinets.

I need to refinish them and put on the new hardware.  Here they are in their original state.  I know the finish is authentic circa 1955, but I just adore a blonde wood finish.  As you can see, we had removed some of the old knobs, which unfortunately, were losing their protective coating/finish.

Next on the list is the interiors of said cabinets.   Bob had already sanded off the ugly paint from the shelves and stained them a dark brown.  The cleats are ready to go, but wait!  This terrible beige oil-based paint (I believe it’s also original) needs to go!  The color makes the interiors look dreary.  I would prefer having the paint removed and just have the natural wood shine through, however, neither me or Bob are up to the tedious task.   I’ll probably paint the interiors ultra white, but readers, I’m open to your ideas.

Our last project is the mason work to cover the vertical window lite.  My reason for this is to block out the cold freezing air that pours into the house via the coat closet.    Brrrrr!  I already have the estimates and the mason lined up to do the work; now I’m just waiting for spring.  Of course, the porch light WILL be replaced with something ala MCM style!

What are your resolutions for 2012, readers?

Wow, your cabinets already look blonde on my computer. What color are they? Looks like you have copper hardware? Love that!

My resolution is just to survive. 🙂

Wait, yeah, I’m with Eartha – the finish on your cabinets looks totally blonde on my computer too. Is there something we are missing Sable, is the finish bad too or something?

I agree with Eartha – my resolution is just to survive too. I had too many projects last year, I am kinda projected out if you know what I mean! 🙂

    Earthaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! Saraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

No, they’re not blonde. They’re that orange-y rusty color that was so popular back then. When I mean blonde, I mean blonde, like the pickled white finish.

Yes, the original hardware is copper, but when I tried to clean them up, I was horrified to see the finish float down the drain! I couldn’t find anything in copper that screamed MCM, but I did find satin brass “saucer” MCM hardware and brass hinges.

Neither of you suggested an interior cabinet paint color, LOL!

Soft mint green? What color is the paint in your kitchen?

White, what else, LOL? I love mint green; in fact, my bathroom tiles are mint green, more of a medium shade though.

Since I’m doing neutral colors, I want to hit it with some color.

The white walls were already there. I haven’t painted them yet.
