March 13, 2012A Mad Men Sewalong! Peggy’s Perfect Skirt – Part 3 – Skirt Back
How’s everyone’s sewalong projects coming along? I don’t know about you, but working on this skirt is really getting me super excited for the Mad Men premiere on the 25th!
Two weeks ago, we completed our skirt fronts. Today, we’re going to work on the skirt back (Unit 2 in the pattern instructions). Today’s unit is pretty quick and easy!
Now – I didn’t follow the pattern instructions precisely on this one. They suggested you sew the darts, sew up the centre back of the skirt, leaving an opening for the zipper, sew the skirt back to the sides, and then sew in the zipper. I prefer to sew in my zipper before the skirt back gets attached, as I find it way easier. However, you can sew this skirt however you like – it’s all personal preference!
Grab your skirt back pieces, and sew your darts. When pressing the darts, make sure you press them towards the centre of the skirt:
Next, I am going to install the zipper. Another thing I find that makes zipper installation way easier is if I finish the raw edges of the zipper seam before doing any sewing for the zipper at all. I am just running mine through the serger, but use whatever method you like.
Now I am going to stitch up the centre back seam, and install my zipper. I used the same method that the directions suggest, but use whatever technique you like.
Once you’ve done that, grab your skirt front. We’re now going to attach the skirt front to the back along the side seams. Press your seams open, and finish your raw edges how you like.
And that’s it! The only other thing you might want to do at this point is check for fit. It’s much easier to make any changes to your darts, side seams, etc before your waistband is on.
Here’s mine on my dressform – I am pleased with the fit at this point, so no changes for me (For once! Usually I have to make changes!).
That’s it for this week! Come back in one week, for a special post next Tuesday – we’re going to finish up our projects in time to wear for the premiere! (I know I will be wearing mine!)
Any questions – feel free to ask in the comments! I love to hear your project updates as well, so keep them coming!
