March 29, 2012Installing A New Old Stock Hall Mack Soap Holder in Mom’s 1950s Time Capsule Condo
Bad me! I should have taken a picture of the original chrome soap holder in the shower. Bad, bad me! I promise it was not much to see though. It was practically falling off of the wall anyway, so when the inspector was “inspecting” he just pulled it off the wall by barely even pulling on it.
Soooooo, here is what we were left with, a nice little hole right smack dab in the middle of all the tile.
Since the old soap holder was all crudded up and looked pretty horrible I took it upon myself to find a new pretty, shiny version!
They do sell similar models of the recessed soap dishes at Home Depot, and many other stores as well. So if you are in the market definitely shop around.
For some reason I got in my my head that I wanted the ‘real deal’ old school Hall Mack version, even though Hall Mack no longer manufactures them. So, I started hunting around on e-Bay and actually found one that was for sale! It was even new old stock! YAY!
Here is a scan of the bottom of the box. It is from the Coronado line.
I have to admit that I felt pretty guilty taking this out of the box and actually installing it, but it was such a perfect match we just had to go for it.
Here is Mike installing a new piece of wood to screw the soap holder into. The old piece of wood was falling apart, so that could not be used as a brace any longer. We went with a nice solid piece of birch.
Here he is drilling out the screw holes for the soap holder to mount to.
Oooohhhhhh, we are actually attaching the soap holder now!
One last screw and we are all set!
And here is the new Hall Mack soap holder after we caulked around all of the sides. We also put clear caulking all around both of the screws so no water could penetrate there either.
Yay! Big gaping hole finally ALL covered up!
Come back next Thursday to see me FINALLY get started on painting the bathroom cabinets a lovely shade of turquoise!
