New Sponsor Shout-Out – OrWa Designs and Their Mid-Century Inspired Custom Furniture

I am excited to introduce everyone to a new sponsor here at  No Pattern Required: OrWa Designs! When Christy from OrWa contacted me, I was beyond thrilled. Besides having some great vintage items in their Etsy shop, OrWa has their own line of custom retro furniture. How fun is that?  I have to confess that I am completely excited about all their designs. So without further gushing by me, here is Christy and some of OrWa Designs’ fantastic furnishings!

Hello, everyone! My name is Christy, and I am one-half of the design team at OrWa Designs. OrWa was created by me and my boyfriend, Randall, when we both lost our jobs over a year ago and realized we both have artistic talents we weren’t using in the corporate working world. Randall and I started out going to garage sales and thrift stores seeking out vintage pieces of furniture to fix up, refinish or paint. We were always hoping to find Mid-Century Modern pieces, but as time went on Mid-Century furniture became more popular and also harder and harder to find in our area of Portland, Oregon.

We’d hit a huge Mid-Century drought! The last 2 pieces of Mid-Century furniture we found were a small 1950’s record player cabinet and a 1950’s bookcase. The record player cabinet is what inspired us to make our own cube side tables which was our very first piece of hand made furniture.

We took the basic cube shape with the lift up lid and added our own hand cut retro stars design. The bookcase was our second hand made piece, it was more challenging but a huge success! We took the basic design and added our own hand cut diamonds on the sliding doors and added color.

Our Mid-Century Inspired nightstand is our first completely original design, with a drop down cabinet door accented by hand cut diamond shapes. These nightstands were not inspired by a specific original piece of 1950’s furniture but still looks very Mid-Century Modern with a twist.

Our next mission of building Mid-Century Inspired TV Stands / Credenzas was brought on by searching the wanted projects section of the custommade website. Someone was asking for a custom Mid-Century style TV stand, so I contacted her and said "we can do that". This piece was completely customized to her needs, size, shelving, color, etc. The finished piece turned out beautifully, so we adapted the design for our Etsy shop as an additional furniture design to offer and in no time people on Etsy were asking for the new custom TV stands! These were and still are a big hit! We build more TV stands / credenzas than anything else.

And we aren’t out of ideas yet! We just added coffee tables and atomic starburst coasters to our inventory!

We are now so busy building our current Mid-Century Inspired furniture that we don’t even have time to invent new designs! Every customer receives a custom piece of furniture to fit their needs to perfection. Everyone orders something a little different so we do get to offer new options every time we finish a furniture order, which is really nice. All of our customers have been wonderful to work with and we have a lot of fun! You can find us on Etsy at www.orwadesigns.etsy.com.

Thanks so much for the great introduction, Christy! We at No Pattern Required are very excited to have OrWa Designs as our sponsor!

Cool stuff! I love the cut-outs and bursts of color. Really nice. It will be a long while before I have a budget to get anymore furniture but I’d love to have a cabinet that would actually HIDE a modern TV. There is an enormous shortage of anything like that in the market – well besides modern cabinets that make me wanna weep.

Omigosh. I just realized that OrWa’s Etsy shop is where I bought my “new” vintage light fixture just a wee bit ago! Nice to meet you! Not only do you make fantastic furniture, you have an eye for great lighting design. I’ve revisited your shop several times looking at other things too!

Thank you Andrea! That is the one thing missing from genuine mid century furniture, they are lacking color 🙂

Laura, that was a great fixture, it will look fabulous in a kitchen!
