Kitsch and Mod Up Your Christmas – Some Last Minute Sewing and Crafting Ideas

by Andrea

I am so behind on my Christmas prep this year!  I’ve got all of my gifts bought, but I don’t have a single decoration up in my house yet.  However, I dug out my McCall’s Needlework mag from Fall/Winter 1955-56 today, and came across some cute ideas – now I am eager to get my stuff up and make a few decorations!  I thought I would share some of the cute ideas:

This Christmas Tree is utterly adorable – and is made from typing paper!  The tree and angel arrangement is meant to be done in gold and white, so it would make a centerpiece that would go with almost any decor.

I really like this idea of layering the Christmas printed tablecloth over a plain one – could be a good idea if you’ve got a tablecloth that’s too small to work on it’s own on your table.

This Santa is absolutely killing me with cuteness!  He looks so festive and friendly.

Now these I absolutely love, and might have to take a crack at making.  What could be more mid-mod than having some starburst ornaments hanging from your tree?  The little Christmas fairy is super cute as well.

If any one would like the instructions on how to make any of the ornaments/decorations I’ve shown above, just leave me a comment with your email address, and I will be glad to send them to you.

I also came across some super cute holiday aprons as well!  If you’re wanting to make any of these, but don’t have a suitable pattern to use as a base, Simplicity 4282 is a currently available pattern that you could easily embellish with any of the festive ideas.

I really like apron #1, the cobbler apron.  Largely because A) I am rather messy when I get cooking and B) I love the button on potholder, as I seem to perpetually misplace mine!

I love the reindeer embroidery on apron #4 and I also love the ball fringe trim on apron #5.  I never know what to do with ball fringe, other than put it on a pillow, so this is a great idea!

I hope this gives you some ideas for your holiday decor!
