Some Retro Reading

By Andrea

This week, I thought I would share some of what I’ve been reading lately, with some unexpected vintage resources!

First up is Vintage Life Magazine

Vintage Life is a UK-based magazine, however their writers do an excellent job of presenting articles than anyone around the world can enjoy. They cover everything from fashion, beauty, cooking, things around the home and so much more. I can honestly say I get a little giddy when I see a new issue is out, and I read it from cover to cover. As the magazines come out of the UK, the subscription price is more than usual magazines, however they now offer digital subscriptions, for which the price is really reasonable (I get the iPad edition and love it).

Next, Threads Magazine

The February/March issue of Threads Magazine has a great article on some modern patterns available today that can be used for a great vintage look. As always, Threads has a great review of the patterns, skill level recommendations, etc. If you like to sew a vintage look but don’t always want the fuss of working with a vintage pattern, you will want to check this article out.

Another magazine with a great section on vintage this month is the January 2013 issue of Burda Style magazine:

The Burda publishing company has been producing these sewing magazines filled with patterns since 1949, and this month they have a bunch of great pattern reissues from the Burda archives of the 50s and 60s. You can buy the magazine here.

And finally, another one from the Burda people, Sewing Vintage Modern:

Admittedly, I haven’t read this book yet, but I am pretty excited about it! Although it covers looks from the 20s to the 80s, there’s definitely a lot of mid-century looks. This book works off of the basis of altering some provided master patterns, so it would be a great introduction to pattern alteration if that’s not something you’re familiar with, and you can use what you learn to alter any pattern to recreate any vintage look you like!

I hope you check these magazines and books out!

Definitely do! You can buy individual digital issues as well, so you don’t have to commit to a whole digital subscription if you’re unsure!
