Decisions, Decisions! Retro Formalwear

By Andrea

My older daughter, Kat, has a couple of upcoming events where she needs something a little more formal to wear. Initially, she wanted to go strapless, with a full skirt, 50s inspired. I convinced her to go a little more retro and pick a pattern out of my stash.

I narrowed it down to these three reproduction patterns from Butterick. None of them are strapless, but I didn’t feel like messing with boning, anyway.

Kat decided to go with Butterick 5209, view A. Since she’s got two different events to go to, she’s going to wear different coloured crinolines under the dress, just to give it some variety.

I decided to go with a crepe back satin – it’s a classic fabric with nice drape, that should work well with this pattern.

For the crinoline, I found this really neat fabric called spider tulle – it’s got a different weave to it than regular tulle. I think this will be a neat touch for the crinoline. I also happened to have exactly matching purple ribbon in my stash to bind the bottom edge with – score!

All cut out and marked and ready to go! I did like the fact that there is only four main pattern pieces, although the dress is apparently self lined, so I had to cut 4 of a lot of the pieces

I swore off Butterick patterns in the late 90s. I encountered a couple that were not well drafted, and found them really frustrating. So this will be my first Butterick sewing experience since then!

Come back next week for a full Retro Pattern Review for Butterick 5209, and some pictures of the finished dress. Hopefully I don’t swear off of Butterick again!

Ooh, I hope it works out! Fingers crossed! And I’m really interested to see how that tulle looks. Up close it looks like a purple Eames fiberglass chair. lol

LOL, Tasha – it really is actually a similar texture! I’ll try to get a clearer shot and post that in my post next week as well.

Can I get these repop patterns at Joann’s? They are wonderful! I’m always a little afraid of the original patterns due to the re-sizing required. I cannot wait to see your finished product!

I believe you can, Jen. I am not 100% sure as I live in Canada, and we don’t have Joanne’s here, but the one I am using is a current Butterick pattern. If they carry Butterick, you should be able to get it!

It’s partially because I am not done the dress yet! However, event #1 is this Saturday, so I have to have it done for then, LOL!
