Road Trip To The Past – A Trip On The S.S. Milwaukee, 1957

“Welcome to the S.S. Milwaukee Clipper, where you can save 240 driving miles and travel while you rest!”

“You will be met at the dock by a courteous clipper attendant, who will have your car driven aboard and safely stowed away. “

“You’ll like the friendly, congenial atmosphere of the main lounge. Here you will meet interesting fellow passengers from all over America. If you prefer to read or write, seek a secluded chair or writing table and your privacy will be undisturbed. “

“After you have explored this spacious ship from stem to stern, relax in a comfortable deck chair on one of the broad, sunswept decks.”

“Watch the interesting sites as the sparkling blue waves slip by. “

“Parents particularly appreciate the convenience of the children’s playroom, where the young folks are taken care of under the supervision of a competent attendant. “

“Beautifully appointed bedrooms with complete toilet facilities and accommodating two or three people are available at reasonable rates. “

“One of the most pleasant experiences is dining in the ship’s Cafeteria overlooking the lake. You’ll agree the Clipper’s long-established reputation for fine food is well-deserved and the prices are surprisingly low. “

“The gay and colorful Marine Cocktail Lounge with a magnificent view of the lake on the breeze-swept Sports Deck features and excellent dance floor, good music and a bar where your favorite drink is mixed to perfection. An organist entertains on a Hammond during dance interludes. “

“Full-length feature films are show regularly in the ship’s theatre. There you may also watch your favorite television program. “

“Come aboard the S.S. Milwaukee Clipper today. What a wonderful relief you’ll experience, to forget driving on overcrowded highways and through heavy city traffic, to reach your destination relaxed and refreshed!”

Basically it’s a ferry boat, right? Looks like ‘relaxing fun’ and something for everyone, but…how long was that boat ride? Long enough to see a movie, but I am wondering about those bedrooms available onboard! That REALLY provides something for everyone!

I think it mentioned in the pamphlet that the ride was 6 hours, but yes, they did think of everything! 🙂

Being a licensed mariner, as well as a lover of all things from the 1950s and 60s, I really liked seeing this brochure. SS Milwaukee is still afloat today, as a museum ship. Wikipedia has a small but informative section on her.

Oh yeah, this ship looks like the SS Badger that goes out of Ludington to Wisconsin. We took that ferry once, but I don’t remember it being nearly as plush as this one looks! I think that trip took maybe 4 hours???

I am a little baffled by the bedrooms, LOL, however overall that is a very swanky looking ferry!

That is just about the coolest! Maybe the bedrooms are for people who get randy on ships – or people like me who get completely nauseous and just have to lay on down.
