There was nothing left to do but wait. We started to bang S-O-S ‘s on the bulkhead and hoped that someone would hear us.

Suddenly, I heard the planes flying directly alongside Battleship Row. They weren’t very far away, and they weren’t very high. I could see the pilot’s faces. Some of them wore goggles, it was an open cockpit. Some wore leather jackets, some had white scarves around their necks. One of them waved to me as he went by.

When the attack was over, the sound of sirens were everywhere. Ambulances carried hundreds of wounded to hospitals. Small boats circled the oily water picking the men up. Many sailors were trapped in the hulls of partially sunken ships. Welders cut them out with torches. Some men survived for more than two weeks before being rescued.

I went to Pearl Harbor in 2012. This is a very telling post and a somber reminder to all of us about our freedom. Thank you for the great post.
