My Vintage Volkswagen Westfalia – Inspiration Edition

By Andrea

So, we’ve been feverishly working on our Westi again. I don’t have any pictures to show you yet, though, as the majority of the work has been in the engine compartment! Instead, I’ve got some fantastic pictures of an even older VW camper, from the July 1955 issue of Popular Mechanics.

I love this van! The artwork itself is fantastic, too.

I’ve never understood why VWs have always had such a reputation for being ugly or “homely”, as this article refers to them as … I think they are pretty cute!

These older VW camper set ups could sleep even more people – 3 adults and 3 kids. However, I sure wouldn’t want to be the kid who’s sleeping on the bed under the other kids by the front seat! Looks pretty tight.

I got a chuckle out of this ad from the magazine as well. I am pretty sure that more than a few times my hubby wished he had a 1973 edition of this book!

I will be having more upcoming My Vintage Volkwagen Westfalia posts coming up in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

Me, too, Sara! I guess they were a really different type of vehicle for the time , though – maybe that’s why people found them ugly?
