Won’t You Be My Neighbor – Lustron Alert in South Bend, IN

by RetroRuth

This week thanks goes out to reader Rachel and her eagle eye. She spotted this  hidden Lustron home in South Bend, Indiana!  According to Rachel, she recognized it due to the distinctive bathroom walls.

This little baby is just screaming for someone to buy it and restore it! It little has two bedrooms and one bath and was built in 1949.  It is for sale by Cressy Everett for $77, 550.

    Hi Sara,

In looking Home Depot’s site, it appears that the tub is separate from the surround. The cheapest tub I found was $198 (YMMV based on location) and the least expensive surround I found was $59. Please remember, however, that you get what you pay for. You may be better off doing a good clean and repair until you can save up for something of higher quality, especially where water is concerned.

I love Lustron houses! It’s too bad that they covered the outside with siding, but the interior looks fairly original. It seems like a very low price for a Lustron, and that it would be a good deal all the way around. Thanks for sharing this post with Lustron lovers!

I think it can be saved!

There are good Lustron sites that a new owner can access and us Lookie-Lou’s can ogle. I see for sale in WV, WI and IL. There was one FS in NC for some time at 25K (I last looked in 2012).

I thought it would be great to get two and make a 3 bed, 2 bath out of it and sell the kitchen, extra bed and LR for parts or build a wood frame bath and make a 1/1 rental.

Not a great choice for AZ I think.

This first one will make you weep.
