August 22, 2013March 1956 : Let’s All Go On A Honeymoon Trip With Sally Jo and Dean – Part 2
We are continuing along on our honeymoon road trip with Sally Jo and Dean in Part 2 of this 4 part series. If you missed Part 1 make sure to check it out!
These are the honeymoon memories of Sally Jo and Dean Kilpatrick from late March 1956.
They made it to Memphis, but it doesn’t seem like they saw very much of the town….only some window shopping and a stroll through a park.
I am assuming they went to Vicksburg to tour the National Military Park since this pamphlet was in the book….though no mention of it is made in her scrapbook.
Oops….Sally Jo mistakenly put “Tennessee” after Vicksburg – it should have been Mississippi. Oh well, I’d probably do the same thing if I got up at 5am too!
Here is some paper ephemera from the motel they stayed at – Motel Dixiana.
I LOVE this matchbook cover image illustrating the interior of Motel Dixiana, it looks like an adorable place to stay!
Here is a vintage postcard image of the Motel Dixiana from the website Preservation In Mississippi
And here is a recent image of the motel from Google Maps. It look very much the same and still retains that way cool sign!
Now we are off to Louisiana! They visited Afton Villa and Gardens . Sadly, after they visited the villa it burned down in 1963 after having been completely restored in the 1940s.
I guess they didn’t do much sightseeing in Baton Rouge since it appears they were lost for most of the time while in that area!
However, they did manage to make it to a snake and alligator farm somewhere in Louisiana….seems like she was more enchanted by the baby monkey though!
Looks like they are doing a lot of driving on the 25th….we’ve made it all the way into Texas now!
It appears they logged over 200 miles of driving on this day going from Louisiana to Texas…..I am sure back then that was a pretty significant day of driving. I guess Port Arthur did not impress them so they decided to make the drive to Beaumont Texas about 20 miles away.
Come back next Thursday for Part 3 of Sally Jo and Dean’s honeymoon trip!
