September 16, 2013Let’s Welcome Sandra From Shoutout And Her Lovely Vintage-Inspired Greeting Cards!
Everyone give a big welcome to our newest sponsor, Sandra, from the amazing store Shoutout on Etsy. Sandra has a drop-dead gorgeous line of vintage-inspired greeting cards that I am just dying for everyone to see! She was also nice enough to share a bit of her story with us, including some lovely shots of her home and her line-up of loveable cats. Take it away, Sandra!
I am an adverting art director by profession which I believe is both a blessing and a curse. It’s been a great way to make a living but as an artist, it comes with a whole lot of rules and limitations. So, it’s always been very important to me to have other projects that allow me to follow my own visions.
I have always had a passion for making things. (My great grandmother taught me to crochet and I sewed my first skirt at the age of 6) Over the years I have explored many creative outlets – from drawing and painting, to sewing and knitting, to pottery (yes, I have a home studio complete with a wheel and a kiln).
My creative influences are drawn from both the art world and the craft world.
I love the expressive textile designs of Vera Neumann and the modern abstract work of Lucienne Day. I love the illustrations of Jim Flora (I have four Mambo Cats, myself) . I love the confident lines of modern furniture and the graceful lines of Heath pottery (a gift from my husband are pieces from her personal collection he was able to purchase out of her estate!).
I’ve always been drawn to the 50s and 60s aesthetic – artists like Picasso, Miro, and Dali make my heart skip a beat. My husband and I recently purchased a woodcut by an artist named Clay Walker which was done in 1957. (Walker once had a two-man show with Picasso and sold more pieces than Pablo during the opening!) The piece hangs in the dining room of our 1960s ranch.
I guess didn’t really realize how much mid-century design influenced me until I was taking pottery classes at UCSD craft center, and the director once referred to me as “the person who is doing all of the 50s stuff”. I took another look at my work and realized he was right!
I see Shoutout as an extension of all of these things – I have taken inspiration from the style I love from the past and created the greeting card line you see here. I hope you enjoy my work!
Wow, Sandra! Your greeting card line is gorgeous and I am floored by the pictures of your collections and home. And those are some pretty cute kitties. Thank you for sharing with us!
