September 10, 2013Tuesday Etsy Roundup – Vanilla Vivian Gets A Vibrant Makeover
This week’s Etsy round-up features a sad-sack of a girl named Vivian. For all of her years, she wore beige. Light beige and dark beige and just a hint of beige. She was simply afraid of color. She decorated her house with the same lackluster barely-there hue. All of her friends and family knew her that way. “Vivian is just a plain girl” they’d say as they gifted her with taupe scarves on birthdays and nude lipsticks at Christmas.
Then one day, which happened to be her fortieth birthday, Vivian woke up and decided “No more!” She had spent the past fourteen thousand and six hundred days blending in and at that very waking moment decided that she wanted to infuse her life with color. Nobody knows why it happened. Not even Vivian. It was as if by magic! That morning, she had rolled out of bed and reached for her pale, pitiful house shoes like she had always done every single morning before. She almost slipped her feet into them but to her own surprise, instead stood up barefoot, shoving the house shoes under the bed. Vivian threw open her curtains and with the morning sun on her face, decided that the dawn of her fortieth birthday was going to be a turning point. “Color!” she shrieked, startling herself with her own pep while pinching her cheeks into a blush as she looked at herself in her dressing mirror. “I’m no longer going to be colorless! Why I’m going to be just like the rainbow!” she cheered as she threw on some so-so clothes and grabbed her boring ecru purse and headed to do some shopping.
First things first, Vivian decided that she should start with that very purse. She tossed that unenthusiastic version of a clutch straight into the thrift store donation bin and bid it a fond farewell. “You’re not even trying, you!” she mumbled as it disappeared into the bin on the street corner. She was a woman on a mission and within no time at all, she found this beauty by seller FreshandSwanky and knew that it was the one.
Vivian just loved the perky colorful stripes and fun lucite handle and knew that it would get attention everywhere that she went! “Am I ready for this much attention?” she asked herself, pausing for a moment to reflect on her new mindset. It was barely a second before she proclaimed, “Why, yes I am! I’m going to buy a whole new wardrobe too! In the most beautiful colors and patterns that I can find!”
With the words barely out of her mouth, she was then drawn to this incredible Lily Pulitzer dress from seller VelouriaVintage.
“I love this dress! Why…it’s so unlike anything that I would have worn before…” Vivian sighed. “It’s fresh and bright like a new Spring day!” She could already picture herself wearing it all over town and into her shopping cart it went. She tapped her toes with glee and while doing so, Vivian noticed her sad old shoes. “Oh, I’m like Cinderella before the ball in these drab brogans!” she said behind pursed lips. She knew right then that she needed to add some pep to her step in the form of some sweet new heels.
Within minutes, Vivian found these incredible shoes from seller FabGabs:
They were from the 1930’s and were in the most stunning shade of hand-painted periwinkle. She’d never seen anything like them and vowed that she would dance until her feet hurt in those heels. Vivian couldn’t believe her own thoughts. She had never imagined herself swirling on a dance floor in such sweet shoes. “From cinders to princess….” she thought as she laid her hand to her throat in reflection on the past forty years. It was then that she realized that her neck was as sadly adorned as it had always been. “No more drab scarves for me!” she exclaimed, throwing that sad rag to the floor and setting off like a magpie to find some beautiful jewelry.
When she found the shop belonging to seller MadgesHatBox, she was drawn like a moth to a flame to one necklace in particular.
With its beautiful clusters of glass beads and the incredible bright red color, Vivian knew that this would be her first statement piece. And her statement would be “Look at me! I am Vivian!”
The only thing brighter than this stunning scarlet necklace was the gleam in her eyes. “Why, you know…I think that I have always looked good in red! Who knew?!” she giggled to herself as she twirled in the mirror, watching the beaded necklace catching the light.
Vivian liked this new girl that she saw there. It was then that she got a brilliant idea. First she would need stationary. But not the so-so and ho-hum stationary that she usually kept in her desk drawer at home. No, her dull parchment would no longer do. Remembering a girl in her office who had sent out the cutest postcards from the shop of seller Shoutout, Vivian snatched up her own set.
The cards were in the prettiest colors and had a lovely lady on the front. “It’s fun to write letters!” the cards’ text proclaimed. Vivian smiled the most content smile that her lips had ever known and then said to herself, “Why yes….yes it is…” before putting pen to cards. “Wait until they get a load of me!” she trailed off as she began to write card after card before sealing each one with a kiss made even brighter by the poppy fuchshia lipstick that she’d picked up at the drugstore on her way home….
What does the newly-vibrant Vivian have up her sleeve? Who will receive her notes? Will she go back to her old snooze-inducing ways? You’ll have to wait until next time to see!
