My New Couches – With Retro Flare!

by Andrea

The time had finally come to replace our inexpensive, super worn-out couches.  I had been poking around on kijiji for a long time, hoping to find a vintage one that might fit the bill, but never came across anything.  Plus, with a preschooler and dogs, I really wanted leather.  So, it was time to look at some other options.  We came across some lovely mid-century style sofas at a couple of stores, but they were very pricey!  We then took a look at Ikea, and decided we found the Karlstad sofa to have a suitable retro look about it.

We really liked the clean lines, tufted look and the fact it is leather.  Not to mention the price was a lot more affordable.  However, neither of us were overly enamored with the legs.  Ikea does offer an aluminium leg upgrade, but it didn’t have the right look either.

I did some googling, and found the seller thirteencolonies on Etsy, who makes mid-century style legs specifically for the Ikea Karlstad series – in a choice of two heights, and several stain finishes!

We decided to order a couple of sets, and when they arrived, they did not disappoint!  Such good quality, nice solid wood, very well made.

I also really liked that they came with felt pads on the bottom, so they wouldn’t scratch my hardwood floors.

And here they are on my new couches – it’s amazing what a difference a leg upgrade makes!

I think they definitely give the sofas a much more retro look.

I would definitely recommend these legs to anyone looking to upgrade an Ikea sofa!

As soon as I saw the photo of your sofa I thought hmmm, they just need to change out the legs. And of course you did! Great minds think alike?

Those look great! And yes, definitely the right idea for the leg upgrade. Those old legs did absolutely nothing for them! 🙂 Are they comfortable?

Yes, Eartha, they really are comfortable! Both for sitting on and lying down and sprawling out to watch TV. Plus the fact that the dog hair doesn’t even stick to them can’t be beat!

Do recall the color (and height) you went with from thirteencolonies? I’m leaning towards getting pecan, but can’t tell if it’ll be too light in person. I’d love to be able to have something to compare to. thanks!
