Tuesday Etsy Roundup – Primped and Pretty Edition

By Eartha Kitsch

The Mister and I looked for a new house over the Summer but ended up staying in our current home. Since doing so, I’ve begun to appreciate some of my house’s original features now that well, I still have them! One of those things that I enjoy the most is the built-in vanity dresser in my bathroom with the old mirrored walls and flecked formica top. That said, it’s just not decked out like it should be. I shove things into the drawers and move on. I’m pretty sure that the original lady of the house would shudder at my lack of powder and pearls and poise.

This week’s roundup is in tribute to the age-old tradition of lovely ladies all over the world – the dressing table ritual. Here are some fun finds for those who love a well-appointed primping area!

First up, from seller CornermouseHouse:

Look at this adorable little figural brass vanity complete with perfume bottles. So cute! I love the idea of having a tiny little dresser sitting on my dresser. This seller also has a lot of really amazing perfume bottles, compacts and even an unopened Irresistible Bath Gift Set that you’ve just got to see.

Next up, a little word to those of us who want to keep our faces taut and lifted from seller AttysVintage:

This book is called “Miss Craig’s Face Saving Exercises” and I think I could probably use this on my own dressing table! Some of the illustrations are absolutely classic but hey, Miss Craig seems to know her stuff. Fight the droop and give the jowls the old heave! ho! with her six day plan. I imagine that students of Miss Craig’s system  just let their faces rest on the seventh day and spend their time soaking up the compliments!

And once those lovely lips are lifted, there is no better way to accentuate their cupid’s bow shape than with the right lipstick right? Check out this super cool lipstick set from seller LittleBlackVanities:

Straight out of the sixties, this lipstick set has never been used. It was put out by Clairol for “Brownettes” which I’m assuming are the brunette haired ladies. With colors like “Just About Tawny” and “Hint of Coral”, I like to imagine by applying a couple of strokes of these original colors, we could be transported straight back to the sixties! Okay, the seller doesn’t make these claims but hey, a gal can surely pretend!

Ooh…how about something pretty from even further back in the day? Let’s go to the nineteen forties with seller cOveTablecuriOsitiEs:

Look at these absolutely beautiful hairpins, dead-stock on their original card. Don’t you wish that manufacturers went to this much trouble these days to make the packaging just as lovely as the products? And there you see a gorgeous lady styling her hair at her very own dressing table!

Next up, how about a little mod sixties flair from seller oohlaya

I’m just blown away by how pretty the comb, brush and mirror in this set are. You hardly ever see dresser sets from this era and this one just screams sixties to me with the opulent poppy colors and patterns. Items like these truly make me realize how much thought was put into making items beautiful back in the day. Something as simple as grooming items, still made pleasing to the eye. What happened to us, y’all? We need to be surrounded by prettier things! Thank God for vintage.

Finally, I just had to include this jewelry box from Seller DivineOrders.

Buxton was one of the leading manufacturers of swanky jewelry boxes back in the day. They came in all sorts of  colors and configurations with cool drawers and pop-up levels. My Grandmother handed hers down to me and unfortunately, it’s seen better days. I still can’t open it without thinking of her and picturing it full of her sparkly costume jewelry that used to be kept safe there. I just love this one with the plush red interior and ballerina that spins. I do have to admit that I’ve never had a jewelry box with a dancing ballerina inside but have always wanted one!

I hope that you’ve enjoyed this trip to the dressing table with me. If you’d like to learn more about any of the items within the roundup, please pay the sellers a visit by clicking on the shop links above.

What about you, ladies and gents? Do you quickly primp in your car’s rearview mirror as you jet to appointments and then fall asleep each night smeared in makeup  – or do you have a luxurious dressing table ritual each day? Do you gently apply the cold cream and brush your hair a hundred strokes while doing regimented facial exercises? Do tell! I know that I’m definitely going to turn more attention towards my own dressing table and make it a thing of beauty!

Great finds, Eartha! Our bedroom set is one that belonged to my hubby’s grandparents, from the 1940s – with a fantastic vanity that I use every day. Love love those bobby pins still on the original card!

Thanks Andrea! 🙂 That’s so great that you have his grandparents’ bedroom set. I’d love to have something like that. Such history there and that stuff will last forever.

I must agree the pink and gray bathroom with that AWESOME vanity was one of my very, very favorite parts of your house….swoon! Maybe Patsy even used that vanity to primp too?!

Awwww, that music box with the ballerina….so cute! I never had a ballerina music box, but I did have a Barbie music box with a spinning Barbie! Love that vanity/perfume bottle holder too!

Thank you Miss Sara! Ooh…I’d never thought of that. I’m sure she probably touched up her lipstick there, right? Oooh…..

I remember those Barbie music boxes! Never had one of those either. Pfft…

I’ve always wanted a spinning Ballerina jewelry box! Just no luck in obtaining the right one. I also have a strong attraction to vanities and yet I am not a primper & I don’t have one (well, I have a vanity chair that I use at my sewing table, hmm, which might actually be a vanity table – a castoff from a relative). I just love those ’40s vanities with the fabric around the base and the cute little chairs and all the vanity items.

Ooh! I love those too! All of the starlets in the old movies had those!
