Tuesday Etsy Roundup – The “Dress Your Pets” Edition

By Eartha Kitsch

Did you know that today is “Dress Up Your Pet Day”?  Well, it surely is! Apparently, this has been a lesser-known holiday since its creation in 2009. Obviously, it’s still got some work to do to really gain exposure but I’m sure before long, stores will be having mattress sales to celebrate it.

I love interesting holidays and since I was once a little girl who forced all of her family cats into dresses, I am all about this one. Now, thankfully I have become an animal advocate and have grown out of forcing my cats into outfits but I do admit that I’ve never lost my fascination with animals donned in clothes and fancy accessories. For instance, several years ago, I found a box of photos in an antique store that were from a photo studio for pets. Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford them all but here are a couple that I snagged:

What a pair of pups, huh? So cute! I still regret not getting the shots of the persian cat wearing a tiny blue beret. Haunted by my choices, that’s what I am! Anyway, I thought it might be fun if today’s Etsy Roundup honored this auspicious and way-too-adorable holiday. Let’s dive in!

Do you like to knit? Then seller AuctionPost has just the thing to get your dog geared up!

You have just got to love these patterns from 1969 from KroyKints that include designs for every member of the family including pets! What a handsome pair these two are! Can you imagine seeing an argyle Afghan hound and his matching Dad strolling down the street? Oh, I wish!

Next up, from seller ParkwayAntiques, check out these beautiful collars:

Never used and from a 1950’s pet store, you can’t go wrong. I love the rhinestones and I do have to admit that if my cats would wear collars, I’d be going for those gold ones! Flashy!

I once saw an adorable black and white photo of a white poodle wearing a sailor suit so when I saw this one from seller BellaBordello I knew it had to be included:

Once again, if my cats would only wear clothes…. But can’t just imagine a cute little dog wearing these little sailor duds? Ahoy, matey!

Next up, from seller veraviola we  have a little something for the parakeet in your life!

Okay, I have to admit that this is the first parakeet leash that I’ve ever seen! Apparently, a fashionable lady could pin the bird brooch on to her lapel and then attach the little plastic cuff on the other end to her bird’s ankle to keep him close by!

Next up, here comes a little something for the kitties by seller BZsElecticEmporium:

Here is a set of kitty bells still on the display card. I love the graphics on the card and have to admit, that I’m all for knowing where my kitties are. These look like they’d make quite the jing-a-ling too!

What about those pooches back in the day who smelled like less than a dream? Well, seller umeone has just the stuff!

Dog Cologne and Deodorant For Her! Now, neither the seller nor I would recommend spraying this on your pet but it would be great for display. The text on the can reads “By using daily or as needed your pet will be socially acceptable at all times.”  Aren’t socially acceptable pets all that we animal parents really want? My hand was the first to go up what with the brood of misfits that I have in my house.

What about those of you who would like to craft your own pet clothes? Seller GoofingOffSewing has the perfect ideas for you!

Aren’t they just adorable?! I love the gold vinyl cat collar and hello, that last little Scottie dog is in full Nancy Reagan formality!

Speaking of formality, let’s round out this roundup with one of the most elegant dog coats that I’ve ever seen from seller PUGHALLVINTAGE:

From the pink velvet/velour material to the rhinestone accents and fur collar, you just can’t get more fancy than this one! So pretty! The dog that gets this one will be stepping in high fashion. This seller’s shop is just chock full of dog items so be sure and take a look if you love the pups like I do!

Well, that’s going to finish up this edition of the Etsy Roundup for this week. If your pets are the kind that love to be dolled up, don’t forget to fancy them up today! If not, just give them some extra loving and they’ll still shine!

Whenever I’ve tried to dress any of my cats they either back peddle in circles in an attempt to “back out” of their cute little costumes or they turn into a puddle and stare at me like I’m evil incarnate!

As someone who has two Chihuahuas who need to wear some clothing here in the winter months, I am loving this post! Those two pictures from the pet photo studio are gold!

That parakeet leash! I am actually kind of in love with it. Not for use on a parakeet, of course, but I wonder if I could use it on Tom. Hmmm….

I’ve never tried to dress up the cats though. i love that little fur trimmed coat! i bought some tiny dog booties at an estate sale once (the one with the monkey cage!) but they were WAY too small for my girls. i bought a tiny wire dog muzzle too. it is so cute to me for some reason!
