Happy Halloween!

By Eartha Kitsch

I come to you today in a state of absolute happiness as Halloween is my favorite day of the year. I love everything about Halloween! Heavily steeped in the nostalgia of childhoods evenings spent tromping the neighborhood in search of sugary loot, I have nothing but good vibes about this holiday. I love the silly, scary movies shown on loops on TV. I love not being able to walk down a drug store aisle without some automated demon or skeleton screeching at me. But what do I love the most?   Halloween decorating!

My little niece made that pasta and beans skeleton and it’s my favorite Halloween decor item EVER.

Up until this year, I only had a small spattering of vintage Halloween decor items as honestly, they seem to be the most high-priced when you find them at flea markets and antique stores. They’ve been completely out of my reach. Also, I’ve seen grown adults flying into a frenzied dog pile at estate sales to get anything and everything Halloween related – and as for me, I am NOT going to break a sweat in public. Not even for antique Beistle! A lady has her standards, you know.

Since last season, however, I happened to have a great run of luck finding Halloween items! It all started when Mr. Kitsch and I were roaming through a completely lame antique store. We were nearly done with the entire store and I hadn’t tried to talk him into buying anything. Not one single thing! THAT is how bad it was. Then I saw this great box under a table. I was instantly in love with the graphics. Look at that cute little devil!

I figured it was empty or at best, would hold fragmented bits of a costume but instead, it contained the vintage Halloween motherload!  When I opened the lid, so much stuff sprang out that I had to force it all back inside. Mr. Kitsch who was half-heartedly looking at records, heard me gasp, “Oh….OH!!” and came over to find that I had landed Indian style in the floor, with no regard to whether I’d be able to get back up again. Here’s what I found inside of the box!

A bunch of fun treat bags:

The kitty is my favorite but I really like them all.

That ghost on the left is sure enough terrified!

As are this pair. Ha! Even the house! See how the smoke from the chimney makes a spooky ghost?

Also included were a bunch of handmade items from a little boy named Mike Miller, most of them signed on the back. I know a Mike Miller so this made me laugh. Here are some masks that he made:

I think the bottom one is supposed to be a dog but we’d have to find Mike to know for sure!

He also made this owl with glittery eyes:

And this cute witch:

There were also some old masks included:

The rubber one FREAKS me out!

And here is the costume that the box originally held (modeled by my  mannequin boy Jack):

Pip the cat says, “Are you people seeing this spectacle?!” I’m not sure if you can tell from this photo but the hat has little silky horns.  That devil on the front of the costume is seriously creepy!

Also in the box was this old pair of glasses barely held together by crumbling yellowed tape:

And this cute party invitation:

There were also several old metal noisemakers and crepe napkins with pumpkin designs, likely souvenirs from Halloween parties!  That’s a pretty good haul for one small box, right? Since I bought this box of goodies, that poor old antique store has gasped its last gasp and closed down, so I’m glad that I happened to spy that box back under the table of humdrum offerings.

Since then, I’ve added to my fledgling collection with this poster that was used for a grocery store display back in the day:

I think that the little kid in the pink bunny costume makes it for me – but I also really love the lady with perfectly flipped hairdo!

What about you guys and gals? Are you decorating up your spaces for Halloween this year? Any new finds or creative creations? Do tell!

I hope that you all have a very spooky and fun Halloween! Thanks to little Mike Miller, I have my costume for this year covered!

Love all the finds! Isn’t Mike Miller a horror movie villain too? Happy Halloween!

You might be thinking of Michael Meyers from the Halloween series of movies. He’s the one with the white mask.

That poster! What a find. I love it!
If you put that mannequin on the front porch tonight the kiddos will be squeeling in terror. 🙂

You have to laugh that they had to put “Devil” on the costume to make sure people would know what you were dressed as… LOL

Your boy Jack makes me think of The Joker in that outfit!! Positively spooky!(Didn’t anybody back then think his “smile” was just a tad over the top?)

This is the first time in 25 years that I haven’t had to work on Halloween night and I’ve had a great time decorating and fixing treats. Thanks for the great post, Eartha. I love your style.
