Refinishing Our Heywood Wakefield M793 Lamp Table with Drawer

By Sara In AZ

Gosh, it’s been SO long since I posted about a Heywood Wakefield refinishing project…..it feels like a million years ago since I did a post on a H-W refinish job! I was looking back through our picture files on the computer the other day and realized I had never posted about the Heywood lamp table I refinished before we moved to our new house.

Sorry this is about 2 years late…….better late than never right?! Let’s check out my lamp table!

I actually bought this off of eBay, but this happened to be a local seller so I just paid him cash in person and picked it up to avoid all those nasty shipping fees! I had always wanted a lamp table with the drawer but they are a tiny bit hard to find, I was shocked when one popped up close to me and jumped at the chance to get it!

As you can see from my pictures the table is not in horribly bad shape….I’ve refinished H-W pieces in MUCH worse condition!

But it wasn’t in fabulous shape either. The pictures aren’t picking up all of it, but the was a lot of scuffing and scratching to the surface.

The interior of the drawer was also pretty sad.

If you would like to see an in-depth look at my staining process please see the post Refinishing Our Heywood Wakefield M328 Desk Bookcase…….The Definitive Post on Refinishing! – that post will give you all the in’s and out’s of my refinishing process.

Here is the table all dismantled and ready for sanding.

When you are dismantling a piece of Heywood furniture I cannot stress enough the importance of noting where ALL of the screws came from!!! Various lengths and sizes of screws were used in the manufacture of  H-W furniture and you do not want to risk trying to install a wrong screw somewhere!

One leg sanded and three to go!

Starting to sand the table top – sides are done!

And here is everything cleaned and ready for stain!

I always use the same Wheat ‘Heywood’ stain I get off of a seller on E-Bay. There is a seller on there, needful useful things, who mixes stain to match Champagne and Wheat finishes of Heywood Wakefield blonde furniture. It is a stain and topcoat all in one so you do not have to worry about a lot of steps. I have always had really good luck with his stains, and he will mix custom colors for you if you need that as well. Here is a link to his E-Bay store needful_useful_things . He is a really great seller who is super nice to deal with and is really customer service orientated as well! Check him out – you will not be disappointed!!!

Mike put together this nifty contraption to hold the legs upright while I was staining them!

And *huzzah* the staining is completed and here is the lamp table all reassembled!

Even the drawer looks better now!

It’s pretty much the lamp table of my dreams now!

And here is the lamp table all set up at our new house!

Stay tuned – there is one more *forgotten* H-W refinishing post coming up soon! Ugggghhhhh, I can’t believe I forgot to post about this refinish job….it’s pretty much my most favorite piece of Heywood Wakefield furniture that we own, I guess we just got SO busy with the new house and the move that some posts fell through the cracks for a while. Soon….SOON!

Thanks for the inspiration Sarah. I have the stain and several H-W pieces awaiting my efforts. I like that idea for the legs, nice going Mike. The finished piece looks amazing!

That looks amazing! What a great job! We have a Hey-Wake end table set in storage just waiting for this treatment. I wish I had more patience for refinishing! Haha! 😉

Thanks Michelle! Hey, maybe you should give one of the tables in the set a “do-over” and see how it goes…who know you might be surprised at the results!
