Refinishing a 1950s Heywood Wakefield M905 G Cocktail Coffee Table with Drawer

By Sara In AZ

Continuing on with my Heywood Wakefield refinishing series we are refinishing a Heywood Wakefield cocktail/coffee table with a drawer this week!

Like last week, with the step end tables with the drawers, I had really been wanting one of these coffee type tables with a drawer as well. I was lucky  when I found all 3 for sale (2 end tables and one coffee table) on Craigslist from the same seller. I got a great deal on the set of three and I was super happy to have found them all at once!

So, onto the refinishing!

Like most of the H-W furniture I buy this piece needed refinishing BADLY!

There were scuffs and stains everywhere.

I removed the legs……ALWAYS note which screws came from where when you are dismantling a piece of H-W!

Also, always note where each leg came from so you can re-attach in the same position.

And we are sanding!

It’s always such a great feeling to see that beautiful raw birch wood!

It’s a wrap on the sanding!

Here we are – prepping for staining!

Now we are onto the staining.

If you would like to see an in-depth look at my staining process please see the post Refinishing Our Heywood Wakefield M328 Desk Bookcase…….The Definitive Post on Refinishing! – that post will give you all the in’s and out’s of my refinishing process.

I always use the same Wheat ‘Heywood’ stain I get off of a seller on E-Bay. There is a seller on there, needful useful things, who mixes stain to match Champagne and Wheat finishes of Heywood Wakefield blonde furniture. It is a stain and topcoat all in one so you do not have to worry about a lot of steps. I have always had really good luck with his stains, and he will mix custom colors for you if you need that as well. Here is a link to his E-Bay store needful_useful_things . He is a really great seller who is super nice to deal with and is really customer service orientated as well! Check him out!!!

And whew, the staining is all finished up and now we just have to let it dry.

Here is the finished table.

And here is the table in our office at our  new retro ranch house!

Stay tuned – one more “new” Heywood Wakefield refinishing post coming up next Thursday…and this one is the “Holy Grail” edition y’all!
