Won’t You Be My Neighbor – Oak Ridge, Tennessee

By MidModMichelle

Howdy! I hope y’all are having a lovely holiday weekend! Today we’re visiting a time capsule atomic ranch in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. 😏 Most of us hear the name of the “the secret city” and instantly think of its atomic heritage and the Manhattan Project. When setting up the site they needed quick and affordable housing for project workers, so the original homes were cement-asbestos (cemesto) panel pre-fabs, available in several plans named with a simple call letter. They became know as alphabet homes. But Oak Ridge continued to grow, and more substantial homes like this one were built after the war. Today Oak Ridge has a population of around 30,000, and contains some wonderful mid-century homes! It’s quite a beautiful and history rich area that’s only a few hours from me, so I need to plan a visit!

This home is located at 910 W Outer Dr, Oak Ridge, Tennessee on over 8 wooded acres. It is a 3 bedroom, 3 bath, undisclosed square foot home built in 1961 that is being offered at $197,500. The listing is courtesy of Robert Johnson at Coldwell Banker Jim Henry & Associates. For more information and additional photos you can check out the listing here. From the listing:

FIRST TIME ON THE MARKET! Looking for that unique retro designed home, look no further! Built in 1961 this amazing Mid-Century Modern walk-out basement Ranch home situated on 8.32 ACRES is truly a rare find! Main Level living with beautiful gleaming original hardwood floors, Large vaulted Great Room with wood burning fireplace, 3 Bedrooms, NEW Roof, spacious Eat-In Kitchen, front and rear patios. Partially finished basement space with another 1/2 bath, 2 workshops, wood stove, extra room could be easily converted into a 4th bedroom plus tons of storage space! Designers dream home & move in ready! Extensive & well established perennial gardens and a nice level back yard with enough land that you can create your own private hiking trails! This is a must see property and won’t last long.

(That amazing veranda with the swell railing!!!)

(Cute little slate foyer with original light fixture)

(Love the floor to ceiling windows!)

(I’d remove that mantel, just because it doesn’t look original to me. Simple project, nbd.)

(Cabinets are in great shape, some retro vinyl and a different light would really add to the charm!)

(Pink and blue!! LOVE the light-mirror-medicine cabinet combo and the vanity!)

(You could easily swap in a vintage vanity!)

Oak Ridge currently rates high in livability and is less than 30 minutes from the much larger city of Knoxville. It has a thriving science and technology development center, excellent schools ranked No. 1 in Tennessee and a wonderful park system. It doesn’t exactly have a happy past, but it’s an important past to remember. Would the history of the area make you uneasy about moving there? I personally have heard nothing but good things about Oak Ridge.

This one really is a blank slate, just crying out for some pops of color inside and out. Think I’d do a floor to ceiling treatment with that fireplace.

I love this house! This one is so easy to undo the updates and add some color and the rewind to 1961!

The outside is painted with too much white paint. I would trim the house in a redwood color and paint the sides a green in the avocado color family. Make the house blend into the landscape.

A color choice for each bedroom. One painted in light green, one in light blue, and one in light yellow (or pink).

The living room would still be painted white but a softer white. remove the mantel and the ceiling beam would be painted the same color as what it is outside.

A retro wallpaper in the entry hall.

Retro wallpaper in the kitchen, new floor, vintage or new stainless steel appliances.

Possibly vintage wallpaper in the bathrooms, if not, colored paint. Switch out the updated sink and cabinet.

Oak Ridge is a beautiful place to live! It has a proud past. I’d move in today if I could! Knoxville is a big small town with UT, views of the Smokies, lots of shopping and restaurants. Oak Ridge does have great schools and its own charm.I hope someone snatches this up and gives it just the right treatment!

What a great house! And looks like a lot of nice other properties there too. I’d live there in a heartbeat. Pretty views and a small town feel.

Over 8 acres under 200K, and looking very well maintained but not updated/muddled. This one is a fantastic buy. The bathroom tile and wall of windows really sells it for me.
