Won’t You Be My Neighbor – Monterey, California

By MidModMichelle

Happy holiday weekend y’all! I can’t believe it’s almost July 4th, where has the summer gone?! The 4th always seems like the midpoint of the summer, even if it technically isn’t, and that half of the summer is over. 🙁 Anyhoo, today we have a beauty located near the central coast of California, a quick 15 minute drive to the popular Cannery Row and Monterey Bay Aquarium. It’s nearly all original, and the listing agent says it has great potential for a remodel. 😵 Let’s hope the new owners appreciate its true mid-century modern roots instead!

This home is located at 1276 Castro Rd, Monterey, California on a wooded lot in a desirable neighborhood. It is a 3 bedroom, 3 bath, 2,311 square foot home built in 1966 that is being offered at $899,000. The listing is courtesy of Julie Davis at Coldwell Banker. For more information and additional photos you can check out the listing here. From the listing:

Original mid-century home in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Monterey. This home sits among the oaks and redwood trees in a quiet and peaceful setting. Great potential to remodel. Enjoy lovely open beam ceilings and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the forest. Basement room can be used as a fourth bedroom or recreation room.

ADDITIONAL EXTERIOR

FOYER

LIVING ROOM

(Love the fireplace and paneling!)

KITCHEN & DINING ROOM

(Cabinets seem to be original, I’d change out the countertops.)

DEN

BEDROOMS

BATHROOMS

(Master bath is so cute, adore the wallpaper!)

REC ROOM

So what did y’all think? It definitely needs some TLC and as usual I’m not a fan of all of the flooring choices, but it’s still quite stunning. I hope mid-century modern aficionados snap it up. I’d love to see it restored to its former glory!

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but in Monterey CA this is going to end up a McMansion. :^(

Gotta love the vaulted ceilings and the airiness it gives the home, and the wood paneling in the den is beautiful. I agree with the author about remodeling. I’m sad when I see TV shows promoting renovation, backed by the home “improvement” industry (think HGTV). So often they gut beautiful homes like this, in favor of trendy designs that will become dated within a decade. Enough!

Ugh, so much potential to NOT remodel, I love the living room especially just the way it is!
